The Friends' Renaissance Art Lecture Series by Mary Kisler
Lecture Six "Women artists in the Renaissance". While Renaissance texts
suggest that women had neither the brains nor talent for wielding the brush or
mallet, being more genetically disposed towards weaving and spinning,
scholarship in the last thirty years has suggested that the story doesn't quite
go like that.

Curator's Tour The Walters Prize 2008
Senior Curator Ron Brownson will talk to us in the exhibition which features
work by the four finalists for The Walters Prize Edith Amituanai, Lisa
Reihana, John Reynolds and Peter Robinson. The $50,000 Walters Prize is awarded
for an outstanding contribution to contemporary art in New Zealand in the past
two years.

Art Walk to V2- instruments of art
Join us for a walk that combines art and music. The Guild of the Auckland
Philharmonic has organised a fund-raising event which entails 13 artists turning
a violin into a work of art and they will be on display from 15 to 30 September
at galleries around Auckland. We visit three galleries in the central city:
Oedipus Rex, where Joanna Fieldes' violin will be shown; Gow Langsford, where we
can see Billy Apples's work; and Anna Miles, where Mary Louise Browne's work
will be on display.

Celebrity Lunch with Alexa Johnston
Alexa was a curator at the Auckland Art Gallery for nineteen years and is now
a freelance curator, arts commentator and writer. Alexa will talk to us about
her varied career and her new book "Ladies, A Plate" to be launched this
September. Copies of the book will be on sale for Alexa to sign. Numbers are

Behind the Scenes with Registrar David Reeves
What is a registrar? And what do they do? David Reeves, senior registrar at
the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, will give an illustrated talk on the
varied transport, storage and documentation problems that registrars work on
behind the scenes, and without which no collections could be shown. This will be
a highly informative talk, taking us behind the scenes of the gallery.
