What does "out of copyright" mean?
Copyright is an intellectual property right that gives artists a say in how
and where their work is copied. In New Zealand, copyright usually lasts from
the time the work is created until 50 years after the death of the artist.
After that, the work is deemed to be "out of copyright". Once copyright has
expired, owners or institutions that hold the original work of art may still
apply some restrictions on copying, but generally, images of
out-of-copyright works are available for a wide range of uses.
Why is the whole collection not available for online
ordering?
We have selected some of our most popular works for our online orders - ones
that we know have no copyright issues and that have already been
photographed. You can request reproductions of other works from the
collection by searching our online database and filling in the reproductions
order form. Please note that copyright approval may need to be gained and
these orders can take up to three weeks to process and send.
Why do you need to know what I am using the print
for?
These online orders are for your private use only. There may be restrictions
on the use of images for other purposes, such as commercial or publication
use, so these orders need to be handled on a case by case basis.
What does 'private use' mean?
Private use means use for research or private study, or display in
non-public areas (e.g. at home or in private offices).
How do I order a reproduction of a different artwork?
Select a work from the collection and fill in a general reproductions
request form.
How do I apply for permission to reproduce an image
in a book or other publication?
Please fill in a general reproductions request form and the reproductions
coordinator will advise of any copyright or other permission that needs to
be obtained.
