Marylyn Mayo had lifelong interests in education, law and the visual
arts. She collected the work of Australian and New Zealand artists and
enjoyed visiting art galleries, particularly the Auckland Art Gallery.
After her death in 2002, the Marylyn Mayo Foundation was established
by her husband for the benefit of a number of causes. These are cancer
research; the Auckland University Law School for legal research, the
Marylyn Mayo Rare Book Room, named in her memory at the Davis Law
Library; for the Auckland Art Gallery Marylyn Mayo Internships and for
Reading Room, a scholarly arts journal, to encourage training
and research for the advancement and a wider appreciation of the
visual arts. As a result of this generosity, the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamāki is pleased to offer opportunities for internships at the Gallery as a means of developing the skills of people wishing to pursue a career in art galleries and art museums. The Marylyn Mayo Internships at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamāki offer training and work experience for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 3 months full-time, or for a longer time, to be negotiated, on a part-time basis to:
Specific internships are offered at the Gallery each year in particular areas such as: curatorial, education, public programmes, print and electronic publications, communications, research library, audience research and development, conservation, collection management, exhibitions management, imaging, design and exhibitions preparatory work. In 2009/2010 an internship assisting with the development of The 4th Auckland Triennial exhibition is offered on a part-time basis:
The nominated project is in the Curatorial area. The intern will be selected on the basis of the merit of the applicant and their suitability for the chosen project. The 2009/10 Marylyn Mayo internship will be interviewed in early September 2009 to take place at the Auckland Art Gallery at an agreed time between late September 2009 - March 2010.
