Tamaki of 100 Suitors
'What Auckland equated to in 1836'
Tamaki of 100 Suitors is the translation of Tamaki Makaurau, the Maori
name for 'Auckland' and poetically refers to contested ground... people wanting
to place themselves here. My project looks at the physical site the gallery sits
on and talks about its purchase in 1836... sold by Ngati Whatua to Sydney
Trader, Thomas Mitchell. I have gathered the materials that Mitchell and Ngati
Whatua exchanged which was six muskets, 100 clay-pipes and 10001bs tobacco.
