Exhibition Catalogues

in earnest after the arrival of Peter Tomory as Director of the Gallery
in 1956. Catalogues from 1954 to 1969 are now available as a digital
resource. To view, select from the list of exhibition catalogues.
This resource was made possible by funding from the
Arts Libraries Society of Australia and NZ
(ARLIS/ANZ).
On Show
On Show is a free quarterly gallery publication of the events and
exhibitions at the Auckland Art Gallery. Starting in 2006 it replaced
the previous publication, Gallery News. All editions of On Show are
available in digital format. To view browse the

Artist Projects
Since the 1970s, Auckland Art Gallery has championed the role of
artist projects in its programme, with
Aucklanders often taking a lead role. Projects have been site-specific
and the art often intersects with the environment. Artists had an open
approach to the 'content' and 'context' of an artwork. This was a lively
time. Experimental forms of practice often bewildered the public but
artists were encouraged within the proactive environment of the Gallery.
Today, the term 'Artist Project' is more broadly understood as
installation-making has become far more common.
