Why is the gallery closed?

The Auckland Art Gallery’s main building is closed for development. It involves seismic strengthening, as well as heritage restoration of the existing building, together with expansion and modernisation.

How long is the gallery closed?

The gallery development is a complex project involving many specialists and artisans. Auckland Art Gallery’s main building will open in mid 2011.

How much more space will we have?

The restoration and expansion of the building creates at least 50 per cent more space for the display of the collections, as well as international and national touring exhibitions.

How much is it costing?

$113 million.

Who is paying and has all the money been raised?

Three key parties are funding the gallery development: Central Government is contributing $30 million over four years from its Regional Museums Policy Fund, Auckland City Council is contributing $48.1 million, and the Auckland Art Gallery Foundation has committed to raising $33.4 million.

Where are exhibitions being shown in the meantime?

All exhibitions, events and public programmes continue at the Auckland Art Gallery, New Gallery, just across the road from the main gallery building in Khartoum Place.
