The Enchanted Garden explores the many different facets of our
obsession with gardens and plants and the way such images function
as metaphors. A walk through this exhibition reveals how gardens
have come to represent nature and civilisation, the old world and
the new, and the vanities of everyday life.
The garden is a place for restoring the soul through cultivating
and nurturing plants, relaxing with family and friends and as a
place of wonder for children to let their imaginations run wild.
This summer, Auckland Art Gallery's family-friendly exhibition The
Enchanted Garden pays homage to the garden and explores our
obsession with gardens through the ages.
Throughout history, depictions of gardens have been rich in
symbolism and featured in almost all cultures - from highly stylised
Islamic representations of gardens of Paradise to romantic settings
for popular themes in Western art.
The exhibition brings together works from all parts of Auckland
Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki collections, as well contemporary works by
New Zealand and international artists including an artist's project,
objects from the Auckland Museum.
Activities for the children include an activity tree and a
special kids path through the exhibition to help them explore the
many artworks on display. |
