"Aberhart's images are bathed in the light of photographic history, as well
as that of the world around. In his exquisite prints, photography reclaims a
magic often lost in the digital age" Curator Gregory O'Brien
This major exhibition of New Zealand's most eminent photographer brings together
over 200 key works from the last four decades. Among them, his signature images
of landscapes, facades, monuments, and interiors from New Zealand, Australia and
further afield. Using a 100 year old view camera, Aberhart produces images which
are steeped in the history not only of his subjects but also of his chosen
medium. In recent years, Aberhart's work has been acknowledged as a vital
ingredient in the visual arts culture of this country. This exhibition
underlines that significance while also asserting that Laurence Aberhart is a
photographer of truly international significance.
Biography
Laurence Aberhart was born in Nelson in 1949, and since 1983 has lived and
worked in Russell, Bay of Islands. He is increasingly recognised as an important
international figure. His photographs have been exhibited widely in New Zealand,
Australia and elsewhere. A solo exhibition was held at the Stedelijik Museum
Amsterdam in 2002, alongside Colin McCahon: A Question of Faith. A survey
of his work was shown at the Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne,
Australia, in 2005.
