Artist: Justine Kurland (USA)

Justine Kurland is a New York based artist whose photographs of young girls in variously staged arcadian tableaux create a form of docu-fiction that blurs the lines between social documentary and private fantasies. Kurland's images often use the compositional devices and landscape settings of academic history painting to support a sacralisation of the myths, rituals, liasons, bondings and adventures of post-adolescent girls. Kurland adopts the exhausted language of official, public history painting to frame the funny, sentimental, sensual and slightly sinister stories of private worlds accessible to initiates only.
