Kids Club - art for children

11am and 2pm every Sunday

Sundays will never be boring once you come and join in on the fun at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Look, learn and create in special workshops with Tutor, Prue Cunningham and the Gallery Guides.

Only $6 per child which includes all materials.
Ideal for all budding artists from 5 to 10 years.

Workshops start promptly at 11am and 2pm so please arrive early to secure your booking.

Workshops may be documented and images used by the Gallery for publicising children and family activities. Please let Gallery staff know if do not wish your child to be filmed or photographed.

Mixed media sea creatures
If you could be any sea creature, what would it be? So let's don the goggles, slip on the flippers and inspired by the work of Katerina Mataira we'll dive deep to create your sea creature in bold colours and striking designs.

Carving nature
Let's celebrate Matariki by using the patterns of the land or the sea or the sky to carve some of our favourite patterns from nature into specially modelled clay tablets. We will then paint our creations, which will air dry overnight.

Mapping your neighbourhood
Imagine flying over your own neighbourhood! Today we create a mixed media collage of where you live from an aeroplane's point of view. Please bring along a photocopied map of your area or print out a satellite picture from the internet to work from – black and white is fine.

Family, Friendship, Whakapapa
Come and make your very own Family Tree (whakapapa) which shows us all about you, and the special people in your life. Bring plenty of ideas about the things you love to do with your parents, caregivers, grandparents, cousins and grand-friends.

Maori Language – special guest Kirk Torrance
Kia ora koe! Today we celebrate Māori Language by making an illustration for a Māori legend, in a very special class presented by Outrageous Fortune actor Kirk Torrance – ka pai!

Today we scratch through the dark surface to reveal a mask-like face, inspired by the carvings of Arnold Manaaki Wilson

Artist highlight - Amy Howden-Chapman & The Great Pacific Ocean Rubbish Patch

Use recycled materials to make art, and help save the planet from rubbish! Come prepared with your imagination and to work with contemporary artist Amy Howden-Chapman, as we will be performing as a piece of rubbish as well as using rubbish for our raw materials to make an art work.

Holiday programme

Don't get bored during the school holidays!

The Auckland Art Gallery runs exciting holiday art programmes every school holidays.

Ideal for all budding artists  aged from 5 to 12 years.
10am to 12pm
Cost: $10 per child includes all materials a drink and a biscuit.
Please note that for each programme each day is the same.
Limited to 25 per workshop

July  Holiday programmes 2008

Week 1: Tuesday 8, Wednesday 9, Thursday 10 July
10am to 12 noon
For 5 to 10 year olds
Making Masks
Inspired by Arnold Manaaki Wilson’s carved wooden sculpture Mask come and create your own art mask.
The clever combination of card, tape, paint, and your wonderful imagination will yield some truly amazing results, and when complete they will be ready to wear or hang on the wall.

Week 2: Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16, Thursday 17 July
10am to 12 noon
For 7 to 12 year olds
Weird, wired & wonderful
Manipulate, bend, twist, and form wire into simple human figure shapes then transform them into stunning solid sculptures by covering them with our specially designed plaster art tape. Then prepare your home for an exhibition as each finished sculpture will stand on its own wooden base.
